When mullets were cool...

This entry (on an RSS feed) by Wil Wheaton, reminded me of when _I_ watched Live Aid, as-it-happened; and before my mom's boyfriend at the time decided _he_ could make money off this by selling unlicensed copies of the tapes he'd made for ME.
But it's not about the recording.
It's about the recording STARS.
"Is that U2?" He said.
I told him that it was, and while Bono continued to sing, I gave him a brief history of Live Aid.
". . . so Bob Geldof decided to —"
"Wait. I'm sorry to interrupt, but what's up with Bono's boots?" He pointed to the screen, and for the first time I noticed that Bono was wearing leather pants, tucked into knee-high suede boots. They had an impressive heel.
"Uhh . . ." I began.
"And is that . . . oh my god. It is." The color drained from his face. "He has a mullet."
..."Listen, you guys. It was 1985."
They looked back at me, blankly.
"Oh, nice." It's yet another 'I've-just-become-my-parents' moment, just replace 'it was the sixties' with 'it was the eighties.'"
"The mullet was the official haircut of rock and roll," I said.
I can't begin to explain what this article... how it...
oh, just go read it. :)

Date: 2005-01-07 10:24 am (UTC)the cool thing about the Queen portion, was when they did "Radio Ga Ga", and MILLIONS of people were all doing the overhead clapping thing in unison.

Date: 2005-01-07 08:30 am (UTC)"Who's that?" Nolan asked.
"That's Phil Collins. He just finished performing in London, and now he's going to fly to Philly to perform there too," I said. "It was pretty cool."
"Phil Collins?!" Ryan said, "The wussy Tarzan guy?!"
I shrugged my shoulders. "Well . . . yeah."
"He was cool?"
"Phil Collins was . . . " I cleared my throat. "He was an international superstar."
Ryan looked at me, genuinely confused. "Why?"
I took a deep breath and gave the only answer I could.
"It . . . it was 1985." I said, suddenly not that uncomfortable to take another step toward becoming my parents, and silently grateful that the kids hadn't been in the room when I was rocking out to Adam Ant.
To me, in the 80's, Phil Collins was 'da man.... he was an amazing drummer with a cool voice who did amazing music with an amazing band (that just happened to have some guy named "Peter Gabriel" left in the dust somewhere...)
It wasn;t until maybe 1990 that Peter Gabriel was my obsession and not Collins. After hearing all the early Genesis I fell in love. Now its hard for me to listen to Collins era Genesis, and most of his solo stuff....
Though I really enjoyed the Brother Bear soundtrack and all the stuff on the last few Genesis albums with him on them (and thier new singer Ray Wilson did pretty decent on "Calling all Stations", he was a sound somewhere in between the two).
(Yes I'm a huge Genesis fan, in fact thats my next choice in music for today)
Whoops..!

I'm very curious :P
Also, who is thei Wil Wheaton? From his site it appears as if he is some sort of celebrity, but I don't think I've heard of him before...

Date: 2005-01-07 12:08 pm (UTC)-His claim to real fame is that he was the lead in a surprisingly good movie called Stand By Me back in the 80s, and then was in five seasons or so of Star Trek: The Next Generation as Wesley Crusher. As Wesley, his character was very poorly written, and the fans hated him. (Unjustly, as the writing was not his fault.) He thus developed a love/hate relationship with Trek. After he quit Trek, his acting career did nothing good for a decade. His writing career (his blog and going-on-three books) has mostly been about rediscovering his love of Trek, and learning that he in fact has a writing career. Oh, and he still acts, mostly doing voice work for cartoons and video games.
