money! neat!
Sep. 22nd, 2000 08:09 pmI'm watching something rightnow on Discovery Channel about the US Mint... about the new Dollar coin. 3 types of metal were used in it, and it costs 12 cents to make one. Tests had to be done to simulate thirty years of use - the required "life" of a coin. THe USMint required that the new dollar be made of a gold colored metal, so they used magnesium, nickel, and (damn!) something else I cant remember.
Now they're showing how they made the face of the coin (Sacajawea). Ms. Glenna Goodacre's design was chosen by internet vote. A college student (Randy Teton?) was chosen to model for the face.
Tom deRogers of the US MInt designed the reverse.
It takes 3 days to make the "master hub" where the die for minting comes from.
I saw a 10,000 bill once. It was really fascinating.
Not what you were expecting, I'm sure... but it's still pretty interesting (to me, anyway).
